Dumb – Quickshit 6.2
Quickshit is a well-known literary technique where the writer offers the reader their first draft. That is what ‘Dumb’ is all about. Dumb explores the truly stupid impulses we all get. Sometimes we feel the need to show off the fun we had while you were away. Much of this album suffers from a lack of direction. Aimlessness presents the listener with a certain joy. Bands like ‘Royal Trux’ and ‘Red Krayola’ followed this impulse more successfully.
Buttercup McGillicuddy has been in many bands before. So has Salisbury Bushnell. Ana C. had a one-off single with famous Stephen Tully Dierks. The melodies here are practically non-existent. I mean, they barely are even fleshed-out. Pre-sets are all over this thing. Yet the attraction is more the enthusiasm than any coherent musical strategy.
While Dumb is proud of its stupidity, it shows a certain degree of prosense: a seemingly stupid comment that contains a profound truth. Even though all of these songs are under thirty seconds, they stay with you long after you’ve heard them. Perhaps with a bit more editing and drum solos they might have transcended their origins and surroundings. For what is it is it is very good. Anyone with a passing interest in alt lit super-groups this is a great band. Had they bothered to name-drop me (in their countless name drop songs) perhaps I might have given this EP a better score, like a 7.2 or something. Bet they would have really liked a 7.2. Without name-dropping or linking to my blogspot, forget it. They get nothing. They lose!
