Victor Ibarra Calavera




                Victor Ibarra Calavera writes intense work. This is the sort of thing that should make the reader really sweat. If somebody wants something truly strange, totally weird, Victor may be a good choice. His stories are sad things. For those lucky enough to see him live they are in for a real treat. Gothic readings at graveyards, various readings all over the place really, he doesn’t care. Thankfully there is a place where all these recordings are kept for future generations. 





YouTube, he dominates it. Every clip on YouTube has his name all over it: a huge unreasonable amount of energy. His glasses, blue, his hair, obviously of the bed head variety, and he reeks of passion. Any piece written by him is generally found in Spanish though exceptions do exist. Recently he appeared in Jacob Steinberg’s unreasonably sized ‘Cityscapes’ as one of the many highlights of the magazine. Indeed that magazine is a serious great big giant thing ready to devour the reader whole. 





               The work Victor creates is part of a larger collective. This is encouraging. Since poets are generally being extinct across the entire world perhaps it is best to collaborate. Poetry collectives will become things of the future. Apparently this is already going on with Victor’s work in Mexico. Other countries too have similar poetic communes. What is holding America back from embracing this level of community? Victor appears to enjoy having other poets to rely on and to speak with, collaborate with, and to set up readings with. It is only a manner of time before America too embraces the beauty of poets living together making sweet poetry together. And also the poets will totally have the sex. 





               What work is sort of indicative of Victor’s aesthetic? Well there is the colossal undertaking of KAPUT. KAPUT is a work of sheer willpower. Written in code and spanning many pages it intersects between random code (noise) and the meaning within (the poem). The sense of ugliness and beauty really drive their way into the skull. It is a giant thing. Normally these mixtures of code and poetry are much more straightforward. Victor makes the reader work for it. However the sense of pure joy when the code is discovered is that much greater.
