Appalache - Labyrinths Across The Sun E.P 7.2
Appalache use a strong Western twang to great effect on this short EP. Each song takes a different perspective. The repetitive slowness owes something to Post-Rock’s quiet moments. Crystal clear lines mark most of the EP. Slight shifts in tone give it an emotional depth. Indeed this is a surprisingly overwrought EP. At nearly twenty minutes with only two tracks it takes its time in building up to some frenzied moments. Enjoy the freak-outs for they are few and earned.
‘Labyrinths Across The Sun’ has a bone dry beginning. The patience they have is reminiscent of Earth’s more recent outré. From there they move into stranger, weedier territory. Krautrock influences are unavoidable in this case. Dyzan in particular comes to mind as there is a lot of tension in this track, along with their usage of found samples. It is rather beautiful how it appears to create larger and larger waves of sound crashing down. In the closer they take a more emotional approach. One can hear the singer screaming into the void. This clash with the relatively tender guitar work keeps it interesting. Eventually the guitars manage to subdue the voice crying out into the distance with fuzzy, disorientating noise. Personally my favorite part is the calm ending which returns back to him in the distance, screaming nearly incomprehensibly.
I like this EP a lot. The quiet moments are pure joy. Love the fidelity. Quality-wise one can hear absolutely everything down to the smallest detail.
