Erika Spring – Erika Spring EP 7.4
Erika Spring sounds crystal clear. It is a clean, economical little EP. Feel good this is coming out right in time for the summer. This is pop perfection. Vocals are sweet yet detached enough. The melodies are memorable and simple. All of it seems to come together like a puzzle forming a perfect little picture. I’m glad after so much hazy, hot and humid approaches to pop there are some who go for the basic heart of the matter.
There are plenty of delightfully easy pleasures to be found. ‘Happy at your Gate’ is breezy tune and an appropriate introduction to the rest of the EP. Unlike the rest of the EP there’s a bit less of a 80s emphasis on the sound. It feels slightly more contemporary. Actually it may be my favorite piece on the whole offering. ‘Hidden’ follows with a lackadaisical beat and a slightly drunken melody. The sloppiness is deliberate; it feels like floating on so many positive vibes. ‘Like a Fire’ is very 80s-heavy right down to the pulsing rhythm and drum machine. After this song the remaining two take a more low key approach as the EP begins to recede from the high level of energy. In fact the closer feels perfectly appropriate.
I like the pacing of the EP. Erika knows exactly how to use the small format to her advantage. The right mix of cool and happy lingers on after the EP has ended. Glad Erika embodies the happy spirit of the sun.
